General Cinema Corporation (GCC) entered the beverage industry in 1968 by acquiring independent soft drink bottlers to diversify its revenue beyond movie theaters. The subsidiary, GCC Beverages, quickly expanded to become one of the largest independent Pepsi-Cola and Dr Pepper bottlers in the United States. The company eventually sold its highly successful beverage division to Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (and later sold off other bottling operations to PepsiCo) in the late 1980s to refocus on retail and media investments.
